Why I Cannot Function Without My Team as an Entrepreneur

As an entrepreneur, the journey of building and growing a business can be exhilarating yet challenging. One essential lesson I’ve learned along the way is that I cannot function without my team. Surrounding myself with a talented and supportive group of individuals has been crucial to my success. Let’s explore the reasons why having a reliable team is indispensable for entrepreneurs, including the importance of surrounding yourself with people that lift you up, being able to take a break from the business without having to take work with you, and truly valuing your time.
The Importance of Surrounding Yourself with People That Lift You Up
Entrepreneurship can sometimes feel like a lonely journey. Even more so if you WFH. There are times when I have found myself staring off into space, procrastinating, wondering what the best decision is to move forward, and it’s at those times I reach out to my team for help.
Surrounding yourself with people who uplift and support you creates a strong foundation for success.
Building a Supportive Network
Building a network of individuals who believe in your vision and goals is crucial. These individuals can provide advice, and guidance, and be a sounding board for your ideas. By surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals, you can create a positive and inspiring environment that fuels your entrepreneurial spirit.
What I don’t mean is to surround yourself with people who nod along and agree with everything you say.
What you should be looking for is the same core values. The same work ethic. The same joy that you get from delivering to your clients should also be present for them, too.
Don’t be afraid to invite people to the table who will challenge you and be your devil’s advocate. You don’t need a team of yes people. You need a team who understands where you want to go and will help you get there by not only offering support but asking the right questions, too.
Collaboration and Shared Expertise
No one person possesses all the skills and knowledge required to run a business successfully.
Don’t get me wrong, when I first started out, I was the sales exec, the copywriter, the marketing team and the admin all rolled into one! But that’s because I had an ‘I can do it all’ mindset, when actually, by surrounding myself with a diverse team, I’ve gained access to a wealth of expertise and perspectives. Collaboration allows you to leverage the strengths of others, fostering innovation and growth within your business.
Emotional Support and Motivation
Entrepreneurship can be mentally and emotionally demanding. During challenging times, having a team that provides emotional support and motivation is invaluable. They understand the highs and lows of the entrepreneurial journey and can help you stay focused and resilient.
We have a #wow channel in our team slack to celebrate the highs, and a #sh*tday channel to ask for help with the lows.
Slack has been my go-to for communicating with the team and helps draw boundaries between work and home life.
Taking a Break from the Business Without Having to Take Work With You
As an entrepreneur, it’s essential to prioritise self-care and avoid burnout. Having a dependable team allows you to take breaks without worrying about the business collapsing.
I recently went to Cyprus for a holiday and did not have to think about work once. The team had my back and ensured I was able to take a complete break from work.
What can you start to put in place to make sure you can take uninterrupted holiday?
Delegating Responsibilities
One of the key advantages of having a team is the ability to delegate responsibilities. By empowering your team members and assigning tasks, you can distribute the workload and ensure the business continues to operate smoothly even when you’re not physically present.
My team have their own unique set of strengths, which we play to. I can leverage their skills and expertise and delegate tasks that align with their strengths. This allows me to optimize productivity and ensures that each aspect of the business receives the attention it deserves.
Trusting Your Team
Building trust with your team is crucial for taking a break from the business. When you have confidence in their abilities, you can step away with peace of mind, knowing that they will handle their responsibilities effectively. Trusting your team fosters a sense of autonomy and empowers them to make decisions in your absence.
This was a big step for me. Placing trust in someone else to make sure my business is looked after was a huge step outside my comfort zone, but by investing in the time to get the right team in place, I have found my tribe and I couldn’t be without them.
Maintaining Work-Life Balance
Entrepreneurs often find it challenging to separate their personal and professional lives. However, with a reliable team, you can establish boundaries and maintain a healthy work-life balance. Taking time off allows you to recharge, gain fresh perspectives, and prevent burnout. I also encourage and insist that the team also establish boundaries that they stick to and that will ensure they want to continue working with Boost and Bloom.
Valuing Your Time
As an entrepreneur, time is your most valuable resource. Having a team enables you to make the most of your time and focus on strategic tasks that drive business growth.
While they handle operational and administrative tasks, you can dedicate your time to critical aspects such as innovation, market analysis, and building strategic partnerships.
It means clients might then need to pay a premium for an hour of your time, rather than diluting your value and handing out your time, in many cases, for free.
Maximising Productivity
Efficiency and productivity are vital for business success. A team can help you streamline processes, identify bottlenecks, and implement effective solutions. With a well-organized team, you can maximize productivity and achieve your business goals more efficiently.
In short, I’ve come to realise that I cannot function without my team. Surrounding myself with individuals who uplift and support me has been instrumental in my entrepreneurial journey. From building a supportive network and sharing expertise to taking breaks and valuing my time, my team has played a pivotal role in my success. Embracing the power of teamwork has allowed me to achieve more than I ever could have on my own.
